This was the first of a series of specific-application
(fixed weight) Cellular Neural Network prototypes, in particular for the
application of Connected Component Detection (Fig 2), based on current-mode
techniques [Rodr93a], [Rodr93b],
[Espe94a]. Actually, the chip includes two different
prototypes, both of 1 X 16 cells, named P1 (Fig
3) and P2 (Fig 4). P1 implements the original Chua & Yang CNN model,
while P2 realizes a modification of the former model called FSR CNN model
[Espe94b], which results in some implementation advantages.
