This 16X16 cells prototype was designed as a continuation of a previous version of 1X16 cells (See "A twin-model 1 x 16 cells Cellular Neural Network Chip for Connected Component Detection"). The cell circuitry is basically identical, the only additions being those required for the multiplexed I/O schemes needed for a two-dimensional distribution of cells. Specific input and output stages are included to interface the analog current-mode circuitry with an external voltage-mode world.

The design was intended as a feasibility demonstrator of specific current-mode circuit techniques [Rodr93a], [Rodr93b], [Espe94], for the realization of fixed-weight Cellular Neural Networks realization based on the so called full signal range (FSR) CNN model [Espe96]. The results confirmed the possibility of realizing large, compact arrays of this type of cells for real-time image processing applications.
